Features

Eight spring types available

Licenses available for Compression, extension, torsion, conical compression, rectangular wire compression, non-standard round wire compression, disc and spiral spring types.

Flexible licensing

Standard license includes a single activations; more users can be added as either fixed or floating (network) licenses. Maintenance contract ensures free support and upgrades, but is not necessary for continued operation.

Optional Software Modules

You must purchase the standard calculation module for each spring type you are interested in, and have the choice of adding on any additional modules. This enables you to perform all the calculations involved with a spring design, and also provides tolerance data to your chosen design standard. Also included are fatigue life estimations and relaxation predictions (where data exists for a specific material), as well as a spring drawing and load/length graph.

The Design module (available for compression, extension and torsion springs) allows you to specify geometry constraints and one or two working positions, and will provide you with the lightest possible spring that meets these needs. An addition to this is the Optimisation module, which is currently available for compression, torsion and conical springs. This is our most advanced functionality, and allows you to give a minimum and/or maximum value for *any* of the dimensions or properties of the spring. You then choose to optimise for a minimum or maximum value of any aspect that interests you – such as the lowest weight, shortest solid or free length, or highest natural frequency.

Finally, the Compass module is available for compression and extension springs. This is aimed at spring makers, and allows the coiling process to be optimised by measuring a spring after an initial setup of the coiling machine, and then calculating the optimal setup to bring all properties within tolerance and as close to specifications as possible.

The advances provided by IST’s involvement in the European Commission funded Techspring project (see www.spring-tech.eu) are significant and provide a multitude of features useful to our Spring Design Software customers. The next release of our world-leading spring design software will incorporate the benefits of this project alongside a major upgrade to our materials database.

New Features in Spring Calculator Professional

Fatigue and relaxation data has been added to the majority of the materials in our database, ensuring that designers can verify their springs whichever material specifications their customers request.

Compression Spring changes include:

  • More appropriate stress limits are utilised on most materials, eliminating known errors in certain spring design standards.
  • The effect of pre-stressing is shown more accurately on the Goodman diagram
  • “As-coiled” length is predicted for pre-stressed designs
  • Dynamic effects are calculated in various ways:
    1. The maximum safe speed is shown
    2. The natural frequency for axial, lateral and torsional directions are calculated
    3. The Goodman diagram shows the effect of dynamic stresses on predicted life
  • The shot-peening conditions used are provided for guidance.
  • EN 15800 drawing available

Extension spring changes include:

  • End loop fatigue data is given for carbon and stainless steel materials
  • Extension springs with coned-down ends (specified loop diameter) have a rate calculation that compensates for this
  • The drawings also show a more realistic shape

Torsion spring changes include:

  • Improved pre-stressed design limits
  • Improved torsion spring definition system with and without a mandrel
  • Fatigue guidance for various leg types.

Will it run on my computer?

Spring Calculator Professional will run on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit) and Windows 8 and Windows 10.

What is 'remotely hosted' Spring Calculator Professional?

This is an exciting new option, and requires just a small access client to be installed. The software is maintained by IST and automatically updated to the latest version as soon as it is available. Your designs are safely stored on our servers.

The client software is available on Windows, Mac and Linux.

The cost of the hosted system is £15 per spring type per month (reduced to £10 for IST Members), with a 10% discount for up-front annual payments. The account can be shared with other people, but only one person can log in at any one time.

Can I buy a network license?

Yes, Spring Calculator Professional is available with either single user or multi-user licenses.

We call our multi-user licenses ‘floating’ licenses. If you buy a floating license, our software can be installed on as many computers as you like, but it can only be used on one computer at any one time. This is a perfect solution for situations where there are are several engineers who will be occasional users of the software. Two floating licenses would allow two simultaneous users, and so on.

Floating licenses are designed for use within single sites. If you have multiple sites, you would require a separate license for each site.

How do I buy Spring Calculator Professional?

Our software is available in two ways. You can either purchase and install it on your own computer, or run it remotely as a cloud-hosted service

On-premises install

Please contact us to get a quote; the price varies depending on the spring types and options you require – as well as the number of licences you need.

For existing customers, we are usually happy to offer our standard 30 day credit terms. If you are a new customer, we ask for payment to have been received in our bank before we provide the software. This payment can be via credit card or bank transfer. Once the order is approved, the software is provided electronically (via download), usually within 24 hours (Monday to Friday).

Remotely hosted

This is an exciting new option, and requires just a small access client to be installed. The software is maintained by IST and automatically updated to the latest version as soon as it is available. Your designs are safely stored on our servers.

Are there any on-going payments?

The price includes the first year of support and maintenance. After this there is an annual fee; it is optional but highly recommended. As well as providing free updates to the software, it is essential if you have any problems, questions, issues with your license etc.

Can you supply the software on CD, DVD or USB Stick?

Unfortunately not; our software is delivered as an electronic download only.
