The
machine is a radial type, twelve station, machine with a removable twin head
system to enable single larger springs to be tested. The actuating mechanism enables the machine stroke to be
infinitely adjusted from 0.5 to 30mm.
The fixed spring ends are supported on a double crosshead using a single preload
screw mechanism. The springs are
preloaded by means of a hand wheel and locked into place using a locking wheel.
All bearings are force lubricated by a separate motorised oil pump.
The lubrication system incorporates filter, cooler and low oil pressure
cut-off.
The machine drive is via a variable speed drive enabling test speeds at up to
40Hz (2400 r.p.m.).
The machines control system is enclosed in a freestanding console.
The HMI displays individual cycle counters (24 in total) for each testing
station and monitors the cycles to failure.
A master pre-setable counter is fitted to enable the number of test cycles
to be pre-programmed.
The failure detection system monitors each spring, on spring failure the
cycle counter for that spring is stopped and shuts the machine down.
To enable testing at elevated temperatures, the machine is fitted with a system
which floods the springs with preheated oil. The hot oil is pumped to the
machine via flexible pipes, and spray heads to the side of the test springs are
used to flood the springs. The
maximum operating temperature is 125deg C.
